Overseas High-level Talents Wanted at the Institute of High Energy Physics

Introduction to the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) 

The Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) invites applications for permanent staff positions at all levels. IHEP is a comprehensive research laboratory for particle and astroparticle physics, accelerator physics and technology, radiation technologies and applications, and nuclear analytical techniques and interdisciplinary research. 

There are are over 1,500 full-time staff at IHEP and more than 900 postdoctoral and graduate students. Particle physics is a highly collaborative and very international field, and we have partnerships and experimental collaborations with dozens of universities and research institutions across China and around the world.

I.    Preferred Research Directions 

     · Particle physics and nuclear physics 

     ·  Theoretical physics 

     ·  Accelerator and neutron physics

     ·  Nuclear technology and applications 

     ·  Computer science 

II. Positions and Requirements 

Position #1: Academic Leader 

Requirements: 

     a) Possess broad international influence in his/her academic field and grasp key technologies; ability to solve key technological problems; scientific and technical leadership and organizational ability to be an academic and technical leader; 

     b) No older than 50 years of age as of January 1 of the year of application; this requirement may be relaxed in special circumstances; 

     c) Hold a Ph.D. degree; have experience as a full professor or in an equivalent position at a reputable overseas university, research institute, or research arm of a large corporation; exceptional overseas candidates with experience as an associate professor or in an equivalent position may also apply. 

Types of support: 

     a) Hired as a researcher and Ph.D. supervisor; 

     b) Start-up research funds of RMB 6-16 million; 

     c) Living allowance of RMB 2 million; 

     d) Special circumstances will be considered on a case-by-case basis. 

  

Position #2: Outstanding Young Overseas Talent 

Requirements: 

     a) The position is funded by the Outstanding Young Scientist Fund (Overseas) of the National Natural Science Foundation of China; the applicant should not be over 40 years old as of Jan. 1 of the application year; 

     b) Ph.D.; in general, the applicant should have at least three years of continuous experience in a formal teaching position or research position at an overseas university, research institute, or corporate research facility; for individuals with a Ph.D. from an overseas university and outstanding achievements, the above requirement regarding length of work experience is negotiable;  

     c) Research or technological achievements recognized in the field; potential for being an academic leadership or outstanding talent in the field;  

     d) Candidate should not yet have returned to work full-time in China, or, if so, only after Jan. 1, 2023; upon receiving notification of funding, the grantee must resign from overseas employment or have no overseas employment and must work full-time for at least three years.  

Modes of support: 

     a) Individual will be hired as a researcher or assistant researcher; esspecially qualified candidates may be hired as a "distinguished young researcher" and Ph.D. advisor; 

     b) Start-up research funds of RMB three–nine million (including national funds); 

     c) Living allowance of RMB one million; 

     d) Special circumstances will be considered on a case-by-case basis. 

 

Position #3: CAS Talent Program (Young Researcher) 

Requirements: 

     a) Should have excellent potential for scientific and technological innovation; have the ability to work independently as well as good teamwork skills; 

     b) Should not be older than 40 years old as of Jan. 1 of the application year; 

     c) For overseas candidates: At least three years of continuous postdoctoral work experience in a well-known overseas university or research institute; this requirement is negotiable for outstanding candidates; 

     d) For domestic candidates: Not less than three years of continuous postdoctoral research experience or experience as an associate professor (or equivalent position). 

Modes of support: 

     a) The individual will be hired as a researcher or associate researcher; particularly qualified candidates may be hired as IHEP "distinguished young researcher" and Ph.D. supervisor; 

     b) Start-up research funds of RMB one-eight million (including national funds); 

     c) Living allowance of RMB one million after CAS evaluation. 

 

Position #4: IHEP Talent Program 

Requirements: 

     a) Ph.D.; five or more years of scientific research experience including during the Ph.D. program; 

     b) For overseas candidates: Postdoctoral or Assistant Professor experience; should not be older than 40 years old as of Jan. 1 of the application year; for candidates with Associate Professor or equivalent experience, should not be older than 45 years old; 

     c) For domestic candidates: Should have experience as an Assistant Researcher or Associate Professor (or comparable level); should not be older than 40 years old; for those with Researcher or Full Professor experience, should not be older than 45 years old; 

     d) Exceptions may be made for highly qualified candidates in engineering technology. 

Modes of support: 

     a) Individual will be hired as a researcher or associate researcher;  

     b) Start-up research funds of RMB 100,000.
